Polyethylene: A Major Raw Material in Pharmaceutical Packaging Market Due to Excellent Moisture Barrier Properties

Pharmaceutical Packaging Market

The pharmaceutical packaging market is expected to witness significant growth in the near future. The demand for pharmaceutical packaging materials is always on the increase and this has made many companies get involved in the production and design. Many pharmaceutical companies have their own design and development department to work on new designs and innovative materials for packaging. Pharmaceutical packaging is one of the largest user of packaging materials and this industry is enjoying great success. The demand for efficient packaging materials and labelling is increasing day by day and the industry is enjoying tremendous growth.
Packaging and labelling are crucial part of pharmaceutical packaging market and aid in protecting products from contamination and ensure effective distribution. It also plays an important role in ensuring the correct release of the products into the customer's hands. They form an integral part of all the pharmaceutical packaging and pharmaceutical administration systems. The pharmaceutical packaging market includes both discrete and open systems.
Open Systems: These are more commonly termed as spill-proof packaging. This type of packaging system provides maximum protection to the liquids. This type of packaging involves leak proof seals and special trays to prevent spilling of hazardous liquids on the labels.
Single Dose Packaging System: This is the most common type of system in the pharmaceutical packaging market. The system prevents the spillage of any small quantity of hazardous product from the finished product. This type of system uses a single dose container for the protection of primary packaging material. Other forms of single dose packaging are polyethylene vial, plastic screwtop units, syringe units and blister packs among others.
High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) are two different types of plastics that are widely used in pharmaceutical packaging market as polyethylene is a good barrier against moisture and is not readily attacked by most solvents. It is also not readily affected by strong acids and alkalis. HDPE is mostly used for containers for drugs. HDPE is more crystalline than LDPE, and hence is more opaque, more rigid and has a higher tensile strength. It has a good moisture barrier and fair oxygen barrier. LDPE is commonly used for pharmacy bottles and container lids. LDPE is a low density, flexible translucent plastic and helps to avoid moisture for a long period. LDPE bags are DMF-free, odorless, and not toxic.

The pharmaceutical packaging market is Asia Pacific is expected to witness significant growth as demand for pharmaceutical packaging solutions in India is increasing at a fast pace with the increased availability of drugs in the country. As the population grows in countries like India, the drug manufactures need to look for cost efficient and quality pharmaceutical packaging solutions.
