Weight Loss and Weight Management Market is gaining robust traction with Novo Nordisk receiving the U.S. FDA approval for Wegovy injection for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight

Weight Loss and Weight Management Market

Weight management is the term used to describe the various biological processes and psychological ways which lead to an individual's ability to achieve and maintain a particular weight. Many weight management practices involve daily physical activity and long-term dieting, which promote healthy eating among individuals who are obese. As far as geographical impact is concerned, North America seems to be gaining significant traction in the weight loss and weight management market. This is due to high disposable income and the presence of a massive patient pool across the U.S. Besides, growing awareness among the populace and a rise in the incidence of health disorders could further accelerate the regional market growth. On the contrary, Asia Pacific seems to be exhibiting lucrative signs with an increase in fitness consciousness among people in India and China.
One of the most obvious reasons for the high adoption of weight management is rising burden of obesity and relevant chronic diseases. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2016, over 1.9 billion adults aged 18 years and above were overweight, of which around 650 million were obese. As per the same source, in 2016, around 340 million children and adolescents aged 5-19 years were overweight or obese. This, in turn, can augment growth of the weight loss and weight management market.
Weight management experts consider several factors that should be taken into consideration when designing a weight management program. Factors such as lifestyle, age, and genetic predisposition are the main focus of this treatment and should not be ignored. Some health professionals recommend weight loss programs based on a particular genetic predisposition. Despite these factors, there are certain challenges that remain prevalent and can hinder market growth. For instance, high costs associated with low-calorie diets and deceptive marketing practices can impede growth of the weight loss and weight management market. Besides, stringent regulations on product approval can further restrict market growth.

Apart from high obesity rate, there are several other reasons for high adoption of weight loss programs. For instance, growing prevalence of lifestyle diseases such as hypertension, stress, and diabetes has increased the adoption of weight loss programs. As per the WHO, in 2021, around 1.13 billion people worldwide were living with hypertension, with the majority of the population from emerging economies. Therefore, such factors can stimulate growth of the weight loss and weight management market in the near future. Recently, in June 2021, Novo Nordisk received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for Wegovy injection for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight.
