An off-road vehicle in the simplest definition can be defined as any kind of vehicle that is able to drive off-road and that too on and off the paved or rugged terrain. It is usually characterized by having deep, wide tires with open, deep treads, flexible suspensions, or even hydraulic tracks. The traction on such off-road vehicles is usually quite good. However, the terrain they are driven on may not always be easy, smooth, and safe.
As far as off-road vehicles are concerned, different suspension designs are applied for them. The most common types of suspension design used on such vehicles are truck-mounted, four-wheel drive, and two-wheel drive. These days, a lot of car and truck manufacturers are developing high-performance four-wheel drive and two-wheel drive designs of off-road vehicles. These designs, however, use high-performance shocks with better ball joints and springs for optimal suspension performance. In fact, many automobile enthusiasts who are looking to build their own off-road vehicles choose to incorporate such components in their vehicles.
High-performance shock absorbers and springs help the engine to function better when the tires are under rough conditions. Good off-road vehicles usually have high ground clearance. The clearance should be at least 18 inches; in some instances, it is even preferred to have a clearance of up to 24 inches. This is to ensure the vehicle has adequate space to maneuver over uneven and loose surfaces. Good tires with good tread allow the tires to have adequate traction on the ground. A universal fitting system for tires and axels helps in increasing the life of both items. Many automobile manufacturers offer universal tire and axle fitments for their off-road vehicles. It is always best to have a universal fitment system installed to reduce the chances of premature tire or axle failures due to improper fit.
