Telmisartan is a prescription drug for high blood pressure that has been approved by the FDA. It is the only FDA approved low-salt alternative. Telmisartan is primarily effective for lowering blood pressure, but it can also reduce cholesterol levels and prevent some types of cancer, so it is primarily used as a primary hypertension treatment. For instance, as per the reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 45% of U.S. individuals suffer from hypertension as of June 2021.

Telmisartan can also be helpful in the treatment of acute heart problems. If an individual suffers from acute cardiac arrest, nocardia, or ventricular fibrillation, the doctor may recommend taking additional medication to stabilize the patient’s condition before getting discharged from the hospital. In addition, telmisartan may be used to relieve the symptoms of some types of cancer, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and renal cell carcinoma. This medication has been shown to help with the symptoms of these diseases.

When it comes to the safety of taking telmisartan, there have been very few serious side effects reported. One side effect that has been noted is an increased blood pressure when the patient first begins to take it, which typically goes away within a week or two of beginning the daily tablet regimen. Also, patients who are undergoing treatment for diabetes should be careful about their daily dosage of telmisartan, as it should be used under the direction of a medical professional. Patients who take other medications should also be sure that they are following the physician's orders regarding their adult dosage of the medication.

Despite the positive experience most patients have had with telmisartan, there may be some individuals who would consider this medication too dangerous for them to take on a regular basis. The reason for this is that there are certain conditions in which the normal adult dosage may cause levels of the medication to become elevated beyond what a person can tolerate. In addition, patients with certain kinds of heart problems may be at a higher risk for adverse events, even at normal levels.
